Mrs. Karen Berman-Principal

Karen Berman is a proud DeVilbiss High School alumna. She has worked  for Toledo Public Schools for over 29 years in numerous capacities to include teaching English, curriculum director (ELA), assistant principal of curriculum & instruction as well as principal. She earned a BA in English, a M. Ed. in Education as well as her principal's license from The University of Toledo. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family and two dogs. 

Mrs. Paulette Cole-Assistant Principal

Paulette Cole has been employed by TPS since 1997. She became a certified science teacher in 2004 after a career as a Hematology/Oncology Specialist . Mrs. Cole attended Hampton University and Long Island University where she earned a Bachelor's in Biology. After several years of being a long term substitute teacher she entered a Master's Program for Secondary Science education at the University of Toledo. Mrs. Cole was named the Assistant Principal of Pupil Personnel in December of 2017.

Mrs. Cole believes that all students have the right to quality education and desires that all students reach for the stars. Mrs. Cole an her husband are the proud parents of Kiana who is a proud alumna of Toledo Early College.


Ms. Stacey Oxner-School Counselor

Stacey Oxner is a TPS proud graduate of Roy C. Start High School.  She earned her BA in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati and a Masters in School Counseling from Heidelberg University in Tiffin, OH.  Prior to starting her career with TPS, Ms. Oxner worked as a caseworker for Lucas County Children Services for 17 years. Ms. Oxner has been the counselor at Toledo Early College since 2014.  In her spare time, she enjoys visiting her daughter Adrienne, traveling, reading, and watching old movies on television.


Mr. Robert Shawver

Robert Shawver has been teaching Math in Toledo for 34 years. He earned a BA In mathematics from Cedarville College in Cedarville, OH. He teaches Geometry and Algebra I at Toledo Early College. He has been happily married for 33 years and has two grown children, Robert and Reuben, a Navy Senior CPO and a Master Tech for BMW, respectively (all Math application fields). His hobbies include woodworking, landscaping, and tutoring TECHS students in his free time.

Mrs. Emily Mylek

Emily Mylek has taught for TPS since 2012 and came to TEC in 2017, when grades 7 and 8 were added, to teach middle-grades math. She has earned a BS in Secondary Math Education from BGSU and a MAE in Mathematics and Education from UT. Her classroom is full of color and conversations. When she is not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her husband Caleb, her daughter Anna, and her two dogs, Smores and Oreo. 

Mr. Gregory Schrock

Greg Schrock is a Whitmer High School alumnus and he recently graduated from The University of Toledo in May 2017 where he earned a BE in mathematics, grades 7-12.  While attending The University of Toledo, he was very involved with campus organizations such as the Levis Leadership UT program, UT Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Rocket Recess. Also, Greg will marry his high school sweetheart in the summer of 2018. In his free time, he like to exercise, watch movies, and spend time with his family.

English Language Arts

Mrs. Melissa Joseph-Albrecht

Melissa Joseph-Albrecht, native of Youngstown, Ohio, graduated with honors from The University of Toledo in 2004 earning a B.ED., BA in English, and Writing Minor. Her 13 years of teaching experience spans grades seven through twelve, and includes teaching Spanish, newspaper director, school-wide OGT writing tutor, POL coordinator, Spirit Club advisor, PAWS mentor, and volleyball coach. She was the keynote speaker for the Annual Shapiro Writing Awards Banquet at the University of Toledo in the Spring of 2014. In her leisure time, Melissa enjoys singing at various locations as a local Toledo artist as well as leading worship at her home church.

Mrs. Julie Kwiatkowski

Julie Kwiatkowski is originally from Saginaw, Michigan, and has lived in Toledo since the early 90's. She has been with Toledo Public schools for over 15 years. She earned a BA in English from the University of Toledo and teaches English Literature at TEC. Mrs. Kwiatkowski has taught all grades 7-12 during her career. Currently, Mrs. Kwiatkowski is the drama club advisor and tutors English at the school. In her free  time, she enjoys the outdoors, dancing, traveling, and spending time with Autumn and Calli, her two daughters and the loves of her life.

Ms. Katie Coffey

Katie Coffey is a Toledo native, and a 2012 graduate of Lourdes University with a BA in English and a BS in Education. In 2016 she earned a M. Ed from Miami University. Katie had a rambling soul, and it has taken her around the world visiting may different places, immersing herself in different cultures, and appreciating the beauty of the world we live in and all it has to offer. She taught ELS to students and administration for a summer in Rembang, Indonesia. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, spending time with her family, and planning the next great adventure.

Social Studies

Mrs. Mona Al-Hayani

Mona Al-Hayani is a TPS graduate and earned a BA in Sociology and a Masters in Secondary Education from the University of Toledo. She has been teaching for eighteen years and has been at Toledo Early College since the second year of its inception. She has traveled to China, South Africa and the Middle East where she learned about their rich histories and educational systems and created curriculum based on her experiences.

Mr. Bret DeYarman

Bret DeYarman has taught in Toledo Public Schools since 2016. He earned his BA in history from The Ohio State University and his M.Ed. from the University of Toledo. He teaches 7th grade World Studies and 8th Grade American Studies, but has taught almost every social studies subject at the High School  level. He has been married to his wife, Melissa, since 2018. They have been together since 2012. He has two bulldogs and enjoys pottery, fishing, and hunting.


Mr. Zachary Shepler


Mr. Timothy Bollin

Tim Bollin has been a TPS Proud teacher for over 27 years, teaching science at DeVilbiss H.S. and Woodward H.S. prior to being selected as a founding member of Toledo Early College. A Rocket from the start, Tim earned his B.Ed in Secondary Science Education in 1987 (Comprehensive Science) followed by a ME & S, (Secondary Science Education and Biology), in 1999 from the University of Toledo. In addition to his teaching duties, he is currently the STEMM teacher coordinator, Science Department Chair, and the Science Club advisor. Forever a student, Tim enjoys traveling, fishing, cuisine, and wandering the cathedrals of the natural world.

Mrs. Jessica Cross

Mrs. Cross started her teaching career in Michigan and has been teaching in TPS since 2013.  While completing her BS in Biology and Chemistry education at Central Michigan University, she gained laboratory experience working for DOW Chemical's Toxicology, Environmental Research, and Consulting departments.  In 2016 she earned a ME in Educational Leadership and Supervision from the University of Toledo.  Mrs. Cross enjoys spending her free time with her husband and two kids, going on new adventures, and traveling to see friends and family.

Dr. Kimberly Bigioni

Kim Bigioni has been teaching science in TPS since 2009.  Dr. Bigioni also has experience teaching post-secondary courses at various colleges and universities in the southeast (e.g., Emory University, Furman University). She earned her B.A. (double major in Biology and Psychology, with a minor in Biochemistry) from the University of Colorado at Boulder and her M.A. and Ph.D. (Psychology- program in Neuroscience and Animal Behavior) from Emory University. She was also a post-doctoral fellow in the NIDA Drug Abuse Research Training Program at The University of Chicago. Her research has produced four first-authored publications in peer-reviewed science journals. In her spare time, Dr. Bigioni enjoys spending time with her family and engaging in various outdoor activities (e.g., hiking, mountain biking).

Mr. Patrick Welch

Patrick Welch is a TPS graduate who has spent 26 years teaching in the district. He has previously taught at Rogers High School and Polly Fox Academy. He has earned a B.Ed in Science from the University of Toledo and a MAT in Physics from Bowling green State University. In his free time, Patrick enjoys chasing the next rare bird or catching the next big fish.

Health and Physical Education

Jan Lehman

Jan Lehman brings 29 years of experience to Toledo Early College specializing in Health and Physical Education. Prior to being hired by TPS, Mrs. Lehman spent years teaching at St. Joe’s Maumee. Mrs. Lehman spent the bulk of her years teaching Health/PE at Bowsher High School, where many of those years she served as head volleyball coach. Mrs. Lehman was named City League Coach of the year three times. She is a member of Central Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame as well as Bowsher High School Hall of Fame. Currently, Mrs. Lehman coaches the junior Rebel volleyball team.

Jan is married to Jay Lehman, a former University of Toledo basketball player and Hall of Fame inductee. She has three children: Cory, Drew and Maty. Mrs. Lehman is an avid runner and volleyball player. In addition, she loves to camp and support her children in their athletic endeavors.


Foreign Language

Mr. Ryo Kitamura (Kitamura sensei)

Ryo Kitamura has been teaching Japanese at Toledo Public Schools since 2004. After he left his job in Japan and came to seek his new career in the US in 1999, he earned two master's degrees from the University of Findlay, MA in Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Bilingual Education and MA in Education. He also teaches Japanese at he University of Toledo as a part time instructor while he works for the Japanese School of Toledo as an educational coordinator on Saturdays. His life is inspired by he tennis legend John McEnroe. His McEnroe collection includes over 150 pairs of tennis shoes and 30 tennis rackets. He loves playing tennis and his dream is to play tennis with John McEnroe


Mrs. Victoria Smith

Victoria L. Smith, veteran TPS Spanish educator: B.A. Psychology, & B.S., International Marketing & Spanish from U. of Toledo. Obtained Spanish K-12 credentials through B.G.S.U. as a result of four summers of graduate study & travel with U. of Arizona in Guadalajara, Mexico. Awarded a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship, to study business practices in Ecuador via Ohio University. Completed both M.A. Spanish linguistics & literature classes & College Credit Plus Spanish certification / B.G.S.U. Apart from that, my Border Collies and horse, Gilley still provide a myriad of opportunities to travel the road not taken.

Miss Elizabeth (Betsy)  Bennett

Miss Bennett is a graduate of the Michigan with a Bachelor's in Music Education and Performance. She earned her Master's degree from Arkansas State University.While oboe is her primary instrument, her college training a strong string teaching background. She taught band for seven years; this is her seventh year teaching strings. From 2003 to 2010, she was the double reed specialist for the district. Miss Bennett served as the Assistant Director of the Toledo Junior Youth Orchestra for 15 years. This is her 25th year teaching in Toledo Public Schools. Outside of school, Miss Bennett spends time with her two dogs, the outdoors/adventure sports, fitness, great food, and her church community.


Career Technology

Mr. Steven Thomas

Steven Thomas teaches Career Connections and Intro to Finance Management.  Prior to teaching at TEC, he worked in management for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the Whirlpool Corporation.  His previous teaching experience includes, Owens Community College and the University of Toledo.  He earned his BBA from the Carl H. Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati and received his MBA, M.Ed., and is currently working on his PhD at the University of Toledo.  Mr. Thomas is the advisor for Young Men of Excellence (YMOE).
